Gitane immediately catches the eye with its pavement terrace, where you can soak up the trendy vibe of the Oud-West neighbourhood, as well as its large round windows overlooking the street and attractive period features such as stained glass. The place has something of a 1970s feel. From 10am every day of the week, you can drop in and soak up the relaxed atmosphere. The Mediterranean dishes have an appealing touch of Ottolenghi about them, with rich flavours taking centre stage. Take the kebab, for example, combining minced lamb and beef with a Mediterranean blend of sumac, pickled red cabbage and smoked aubergine. Then there's exceptionally fresh fish, enlivened with kefir and a nuanced fish broth. A real feast! The chef makes sure that there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, and he keeps his prices affordable. One of Amsterdam's gems!
