This history-steeped restaurant occupies a superb 15th-century house that was originally built for a wealthy merchant, before being owned by King Henry VIII and then his daughter, Mary Tudor. The interior has retained a sense of bygone charm, with velvet furniture, an inglenook fireplace and low, beamed ceilings – diners are spread across the multiple cosy rooms. The cooking is rooted in the classics, with rich and flavourful sauces powering dishes such as loin and confit belly of pork with a chicken velouté, gnocchi, peas and pickled shallots.
